This double-ply filter is a pre-filter used in conjunction with the pad filter. With a filtration of size 5 microns, this filter helps maintain air quality against dust, mold, and other particulate controls. It is important to replace these filters when dirty, as they are more effective when clean and therefore the primary filter stays cleaner for longer.
